Gunboat Diplomacy is the term used to describe a foreign policy that is backed up with the threat of war or dire consequences if the nation does not accede to the aggressor's demands. It is also used to describe a nation's desire to show off its military might to cow lesser nations into submission.
For Japan, its own experience with gunboat diplomacy occurred on Earth in 1853 when US Navy Commodore Perry and his Black Fleet sailed to Japan and forced it to end its isolationism and trade with the outside world.
Gunboat Diplomacy in the New World[]
Japan would again face gunboat diplomacy due to the arrogance and ignorance of the Parpaldia Empire. During attempts to establish diplomatic relations with the Third Civilizations, the acting head of the foreign department, Remille immediately assumed Japan to be a barbaric new nation and made ludicrous demands for Japan to submit to Parpaldia Empire. She would later emphasize these demands by ordering the execution of 200 innocent Japanese tourists. Unfortunately for her and her nation, this only awoken a thirst for a war that Japan had not felt since the end of World War Two. The Parpaldians would pay dearly for that grievous error in judgment and their nation would be reduced to a faint shadow of itself after a brief but deadly war with Japan.
Since the nations of the New World had yet to experience the horrors of a world war, it seems that gunboat diplomacy is to be expected if one's nation is to be taken seriously. Due to Japan taking a more conservative approach, the country is both underestimated and looked down upon as being weak, despite its overwhelming advantage in technology and military strength, especially by countries that are ignorant about Japan as a whole. Countries that know Japan very well like Mu, Fenn, Altaras, Topa, as well as countries in the Rodenius continent, did not dare to provoke Japan.
Other nations of the New World would also be subjected to this aggressive and violent form of foreign policy. The Fenn Kingdom would be attacked by the Parpaldian Oversight Fleet for refusing to gift the empire land. The Louria Kingdom would threaten then invade Gim. Even during the Eleven Country Leadership Conference, all nations save for Japan, where more than willing to show off their naval might, and the Gra Valkas Empire made the biggest show of gunboat diplomacy by declaring war on the entire world. This would ultimately lead to the grand opening of the New World War, the Battle of Folk Strait.
On the other hand, the hegemony and violence ideology of this world forced Japan to adapt. After the incident with the Parpaldia Empire and Gra Valkas Empire, the National Diet suggested a more aggressive policy against the potential hostile force as the government realizes that the New World lacks international courtesy and global diplomatic standards back on Earth. Prime Minister Yomoya then added gunboat policy protocols against any countries or forces that are willing or potentially show clear hostility to Japan for no good reasons.
