Mithril-class Battleship of the Holy Mirishial Empire

The Mithril-class Battleship is a class of magic battleship of the Holy Milishial Empire. Prior to the New World War, it is the largest and most powerful class of ship in the Milishial Navy. The ship is roughly on par with a battleship from the early 1920's based on it's capabilities.

Description[]

The Mithril-class's overall design is highly unconventional compared to Terran designs of the same technological level. Despite its exceptionally angular and futuristic appearance, performance-wise the Mithril-class is only comparable to mid-late interwar designs that commonly saw service during the Second World War.

The Mithril-class is a fully enclosed design, akin to a spaceship, with no visible passageways on the deck surface. Its superstructure is also remarkably tall and shaped similarly to the Montreal Tower, leaning notably towards the stern of the ship. Close to the stern, 2 long rectangle ventilation ports can be found port and starboard, these are possibly exhausts meant to discharge waste heat produced by magical reactions on board.

The Mithril-class possesses the firepower equivalent to a Terran super-dreadnought battleship, and it is capable of projecting the same level of force as the Orion-class battleship of the Gra Valkas Empire, which is also equivalent to the Kongō-Class Battlecruiser of the former Imperial Japanese Navy.

The Mithril-class possesses no radar and instead relies on Magic Detection Radar, by utilizing it in conjunction with primitive targeting correction magic for fire control, it can somewhat reliably hit targets from 30km away, at least with the second salvo, however the Battle of Baltica goes on to demonstrate just how lacking the system can be.

The ship's anti-air capabilities on the other hand are still very limited, as periciliary while magic based FCS is present for its main anti-ship armaments even in basic form, it's not even considered for its anti-aircraft weapons, thus the survival of the ship from aerial attacks depended heavily on the skills and experience of the gunners. It has very little anti-air coverage for the bow and stern, as all 52 of its AA guns are positioned on the port and starboard.

As the class name suggests, the ship armor is mainly comprised of Mithril magically-enhanced alloys, it uses zonal armor design typical of early-mid 20th century ships, offering adequate defense for critical systems but less effective against modern shaped-charges or multi-stage warheads. However, the aforementioned flaw can be somewhat mitigated as the ship's armor can serve as a conduit for defensive magic, by changing the attribute of the magic barrier that covers the armor, it is possible to freely control the armor's hardness and alter defense ability against various ammunition types such as high explosive or armor-piercing ammunition.

On the other hand, the durability of the armor can only be increased to a certain extent, and even with the maximum possible amount of effective mana poured into the effort, the Mithril-class will likely only reach the same level of durability as a super-dreadnought in concentrated areas. It's worth noting that during the Naval Battle of Magdola, a 250kg bomb managed to penetrate a Mithril's turret armor, it is uncertain how much can be gained regarding the durability of the magical enforcement field used on the ship, or that it simply indicates that the framework of the Mithril-class is more on par with battlecruisers like the British Renown-class, and that it simply makes use of magical enhancement to increase its durability. Most likely after the Orichalcum-class was introduced, the existing Mithrils received upgrades to enhance their performance.

Battle History[]

Coal Brandt[]

During the Eleven Country Leadership Conference in port city of Cartalpas, she was practicing off the shores of the Magdola Archipelago to the south, where the Gra Valkas Imperial Eastern Fleet attacked.

In a bombardment battle, it drove down one Gra Valkas imperial battleship and others, but was hit by an air-launched torpedo from a torpedo bomber immediately after the raid. It exploded and sunk.

As a symbol of the military power of the empire, the Holy Milishial imperial army described itself as "Unsinkable Ship", but it did not have much activity in this volume.

The ship name in the web version is "Eckes". The original story of the book version ship name is a synonym of the holy sword “Coal Brandt”.

Clarent[]

Along with Coal Brandt in the Zeroth Magic Fleet, she engaged in a bombardment battle with the Gra Valkas Imperial Eastern Fleet, but was destroyed by the immediate air raid.

The ship name in the web version is "Calibur". The origin of the name of the ship in the book version is the sword “Clarent”.

Caledwolf[]

The first Magic Fleet flagship was active as a separate squad in the Battle of Baltica.

During the battle, a torpedo bomber were aspects that are targeted by this crew determined that the "horizontal bombing", the enemy abandoned bombs underwater was wondering. Unfortunately, information on the Naval Battle of Magdola seems to have not been properly transmitted. Fortunately, the watchman noticed the trace of the torpedo, and succeeded in evading the torpedo at a short break. However, before the torpedoes were avoided. After that, they suffered unlucky things, such as being deprived of their prey by super weapons and being tossed by a submarine fleet, but ultimately survived the bombardment with the Gra Valkas imperial fleet and returned it seems to have done.

The ship's name in the web version is "Lotto".

Note[]

  • The specification has been significantly changed between the Web novel and the book version. Above three-view drawing was created by volunteers, but the editor left a comment that it was "quite close". Reliability can be considered high.
  • In terms of design, this ship is somewhat similar to Dreadnought-class Vanguard Starship from Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202.
