Japanese tourists, who were bound with chain ropes to their necks, showed the black-and-white scene in Nishinomiyako through the magi-feed broadcast.
The Nishinomiyako Massacre was the mass murder of Japanese tourists in the Fennian city of Nishinomiyako by the Parpaldian Imperial Army after the initial stages of the Parpaldia Empire's invasion of the Fenn kingdom. The massacre was carried out on the orders of Parpaldian Foreign Affairs Auditor Remille as a show of force to "educate" Japan and frighten it into submission.
The Parpaldian government justified this course of action as a form of retaliation for Japan's recurring and inadvertent interference in its foreign affairs, such as in the Rodenius War and the Battle of Fenn Offshore, and its refusal to recognize Parpaldia as a superior nation, preferring instead to treat it as an equal, as it did with other nations on Earth. However the massacre was carried out under the incorrect assumption that Japan possessed a technological level and military strength comparable to that of any other country outside the Civilization Area, inferior to a Third Civilization Area nation such as the Parpaldia Empire, when in reality it was Japan that enjoyed a technological and military advantage over Parpaldia, and a very large one at that.
Japan's response to this vile atrocity was not long in coming. Undaunted, galvanized by the reawakening of its nation's long-dormant warrior spirit, the Japanese government declared war on Parpaldia and ordered to launch a full-scale counterattack to avenge the victims of Nishinomiyako. Parpaldia's armed forces were quickly overwhelmed in all theaters of war, failing to mount even the slightest resistance to the terrible might of modern Japanese war machines.
Events leading to the Massacre[]
After the oversight army of 22 Parpaldian ships and their squadron of Wyvern Lords were defeated, the Parpaldian Empire sent the Imperial Army Ground Legion to the port city of Nishinomiyako. Unfortunately, at that point in time, 200 Japanese tourists were in the city and were not warned of the coming attack, due to the lack of cell towers and communication. As a result, they were captured by the Legion. Other areas of Fenn were taken as well as the Parpaldians gained a foothold in the region.
At the same time, in the Parpaldian capital of Esthirant, at the 1st Foreign Affairs Department, director of the 3rd Foreign Affairs Department, Kaios, was replaced by Remille, much to his indignation, in order to deal with the Japanese diplomats, Asada Taiji and his assistant Shinohara. They would be summoned to the 1st Foreign Affairs Department where Remille would immediately begin ordering them and the nation of Japan to the following ludicrous demands, which included:
- The empire shall dispatch an imperial representative to become King of Japan
- Japan's laws shall be audited by the empire and revised as necessary
- The Japanese Army shall comply with the empire and be stationed wherever ordered
- Japan shall send a requested number of slaves to the empire every year
- Japan shall not establish diplomatic ties with any other country without the expressed approval of the empire
- Japan shall disclose a list of all their resources to the empire. Should the empire request any resources, Japan shall send those resources to the empire
- Japan shall disclose all of their magical technologies to the empire.
- In the name of the emperor, any Parpaldian citizen has the right to kill any Japanese citizen.
Asada did not even bother to read the rest of the Parpaldian demands as he saw the document as a complete capitulation of his nation, and refused to accede to any of them. Unfortunately, this would lead to the tragedy of Nishinomiyako.
The Massacre[]
Out of complete arrogance and ignorance of the true capability of Japan, Remille would then show Asada and Shinohara a crystal monitor of the scene in Nishinomiyako. Much to their horror, the scene depicted Japanese citizens in an execution line with Parpaldian soldiers ready to cut them down.
Seeing this as the perfect opportunity to 'educate' Japan, Remille then gave the order to execute every Japanese man, woman and child in the line. All two hundred tourists were cut down without any remorse. After the execution, Remille was confident that the Japanese ambassadors understood not to disobey the will of the Empire. However, the response from Asada was not the one she was expecting.
Aftermath to the Massacre[]
"You have just awoken our thirst for blood for the first time in seventy years."
-Asada Taiji
With these words, the Japanese government would then send their official response to this unprovoked and vicious execution of their citizens, which included the following.
- Immediately withdraw all armed forces currently in the Kingdom of Fenn.
- Offer an official apology and reparations to the Kingdom of Fenn for damages incurred. For building damages, the amount of reparations will be 20 times the amount inflicted.
- Offer an official apology and reparations for the murder of Japanese citizens. The amount of reparations will be 100 million pasos (the empire’s currency) per capita to the surviving families.
- Japan demands the extradition of all personnel involved in the massacre of Japanese citizens, to be prosecuted under Japanese law.
Remille would of course refuse to accede to any of Japan's demands, which would lead to the inevitable declaration of war from Japan upon her nation. Japan would then destroy nearly all of it in a short, but lopsided conflict. Remille would later be captured and tried as a war criminal. The emperor would be deposed and all 73 territories would gain independence. In the end, the Parpaldian Empire would enter a period of decline and eventually become a satellite state of Japan, now reliant on it to survive.
