The Scientific Universe

The scale of the universe mapped to the branches of science

Science (from the Latin word scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.

Overview[]

Unlike magic that depends on the magical power of the person, science can be used by anyone who has the basic knowledge.

The irony is that while the countries of the New World see the Magic as a tool to build and develop civilization, the fact that they are still applying science to different levels, as the Holy Milishial Empire has used aerodynamic knowledge analyzed from the Ravernal Empire artifacts to create jets. Unfortunately, the appreciation of knowledge about Magic has made Science almost neglected, to the point where knowledge about them is often forgotten or not fully understood, like the Holy Milishial Empire's jets are under-powered when compared to Japan jets or even piston-engine fighters of Gra Valkas Empire.

Furthermore, magic does not require the user to understand the fundamental principles of how a phenomena occurs. For example, how fire burns. To a magic user, one only needs to manipulate mana in order to cast a fire spell such as a mage launching a fireball. However, in scientific terms, one would know that fire requires three things: oxygen, heat and fuel. Take away any one of those factors and a fire can no longer burn. The reason why science often trumps magic is because of understanding these principles while magic users are usually ignorant of them. It is the same reason why Mirishial's so-called magic technology is so behind Japan's scientific technology.

Varieties[]

Natural Science[]

Natural science is concerned with the description, prediction, and understanding of natural phenomena based on empirical evidence from observation and experimentation. A notable example is when Japan suffers a Magnetic Storm, leaving Oka Shinji as the sole survivor near the Esperanto Kingdom.

Branches[]

  1. Biological science (or Life Science) is a science where commonly it was learned by a doctor to know the human, animal, or other types of anatomy that can be used to understand how each of anatomy works. The biological science goes down to the molecular level where the scientist utilizes it to study viruses and the vaccine for it. One noted biological science is genetic engineering that is used by the Ravernal Empire in creating their bio-weapons.
  2. Physical science is a branch of natural science that studies non-living systems, in contrast to life science. It, in turn, has many branches, each referred to as a "physical science", together called the "physical sciences".
Sub-principles of Physical Science[]
  • Chemistry is a science where people are studying chemistry and anything related to it. Through chemistry science, people can learn about each chemistry component and how it works. Additionally, some can be utilized to make a bio-weapon using chemistry as the main ingredient. Some chemical is naturally poisonous such as Uranium and Plutonium that hold a certain amount of radiation which generally people must learn about radiation more advanced at nuclear physics.
  • Physics is a base and foundation of all structural sciences. Without someone understanding the principle of physics science, one was unable to understand how it works. The most common physics science used is for construction. Physics Science is commonly learned by Architects and Designers who design for vehicles, buildings, and other else that uses Physics Science as a principal. Most of Technology Advancement requires an understanding of Physics science as its basis. Some of the sub-principles of Physics are Classical Physics (Classical Mechanics, Acoustics, Optics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, Aerodynamics, etc.), Nuclear Physics, etc.
  • Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial objects and phenomena. It uses mathematics, physics, and chemistry in order to explain their origin and evolution. Objects of interest include planets, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and comets.
  • Earth Science or Geoscience includes all fields of natural science related to the planet Earth (in this case the New World). This is a branch of science dealing with the physical and chemical constitution of the New World and its atmosphere. Earth science can be considered to be a branch of planetary science, but with a much older history. Earth science encompasses four main branches of study, the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the biosphere, each of which is further broken down into more specialized fields.

Applied Science[]

Applied science is the application of existing scientific knowledge to practical applications, like technology or inventions.

Branches[]

  • Engineering fields include thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, kinematics, electromagnetism, materials science, earth sciences, engineering physics.
  • Medical sciences, for instance, medical microbiology and clinical virology, are applied sciences that apply biology toward medical knowledge and inventions, but not necessarily medical technology, whose development is more specifically biomedicine or biomedical engineering.

Magic Versus Science[]

Advantages of Science against Magic[]

  • Can be used by anyone, regardless of whether they can manipulate mana or not
  • Has shown to be faster and more powerful in many cases
  • It is more convenient and does not require a long preparation or process each time it is invoked, (ie: chanting or potions). This is especially critical in times of battle or disaster
  • Once the principles of science are learned, they can be applied in a variety of ways, while magic can be too specialized
  • Magic is difficult to use in combat as there are not enough mages trained in combat-oriented spells.
  • It is far easier to train soldiers and replace weapons using science than it is for combat mages and their magical tools
  • In civilian areas, science is easier to access and repair than magic

Disadvantages of Science against Magic[]

  • Learning and mastering the fundamentals of science is a very long process and requires a considerable amount of time and effort to study.
  • Those who have the ability to manipulate mana have an advantage over those who don't. People from the transferred nations have an inherent lack of mana manipulation.
  • In some cases, magic is able to bend or even ignore the laws of physics.
  • Some feats of science can be easily achieved by magic, such as healing a badly-injured woman from a car crash.
  • Some magic are available first in lieu of technology such as detecting human presence but only limited to magic users.

Noted Users/Operators[]

So far, there are known 5 nations that are users of science and mechanical technology in the New World.

Japan[]

Hailing from 21st Century Earth, Japan has the the culmination of knowledge of almost 6000 years of science and technology since the time of the Ancient Egyptians and Sumerians until the modern day.

Gra Valkas Empire[]

Hailing from Yggdra, the science and mechanical-based technology of Gra Valkas Empire is comparable to the understanding of science and technology on Earth during World War 2.

Mu[]

Although Mu originally came from Earth and has more than 10,000 years of using science and technology to improve themselves, they didn't experience the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolutions of Earth, so their advancements in science and mechanical technology arrived at a later date and is only similar to the early 1900s Earth.

Magicaraich Community[]

Although they are also users of magic, they are also known for mixing magic and mechanical technology to improve their nation. Mostly, their mechanical-based equipment came from Mu. With the arrival of Japan and their highly advanced science and mechanical technology, they are now interested in converting mechanical based Japanese equipment to magic-based equipment.

Esperanto Kingdom[]

Esperanto is the only human nation in the Demon Continent, the Grameus Continent. Although they still use magic, they had the highest understanding of science and mechanical technology outside Japan, Gra Valkas Empire and the Civilized Areas. They are known to make and use guns that uses black powder as propellant instead of powdered magic gems.
